Recognise that leadership is about influencing people - Although most of us will never be the next Martin Luther King, we can all learn how to influence the people within our given circle of colleagues, friends and family because “leadership is not a position occupied but an influence exercised”
If given a choice between talent and attitude, pick attitude every time - Successful teams and organizations are made up of positive, can-do people. Even if the person with a bad attitude happens to be your star performer, get rid of him. Even if they’re star performers, they’ll have a negative effect on your team. They’re poor examples for others and their attitudes are contagious
Know that the selection of the right people can make your leadership and management easier. It helps if you select people who have the natural talent to do the job, who have a positive attitude to doing the job and who are a ‘fit’ to the culture of the organization - or you’ll just be hiring a problem.
Invest significantly in people to produce more leaders
“Your leadership ability - for better or for worse - always determines your effectiveness, your potential impact on others and your
personal success.” John Maxwell
