Principle 3 - People will only give of their best when they feel valued
“The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.”
Mahatma Gandhi
Great leaders...
Know how to engage people and make them feel valued - Engaged people (- that is, those who are fully motivated and who feel valued) give their best and operate at maximum effectiveness levels. Productivity, customer satisfaction, profit, employee morale, safety and quality outputs are all directly linked to ‘engagement’
Value their people by keeping them well-informed - Remember that great leadership isn’t just professional, it’s personal. Keep people informed on the things that mater to them
Cull de-motivated or disengaged people from the organisation. - Some people are never going to be happy in your type of organization and you can’t find them a suitable job; it can take just one such person to destroy the collaborative atmosphere of an entire department
Grasp every opportunity to stretch people - Regularly look for opportunities to rotate people, to develop them and to enhance understanding throughout the organisation
Listen before telling - Generally, people will respond positively if instead of making pronouncements, you make requests; you offer suggestions and ideas instead of dictating and demanding; when people mess up, use the incident as a learning opportunity
Promote a culture where people have freedom to think for themselves - Give your people freedom to think for themselves, but make sure they know where the fence line is. Don’t confuse boundaries and bridles! Establishing boundaries is a matter of practicality and safety, not ego
Regularly inquire about their people’s progress - You and you alone are responsible for ensuring they reach their goals and for developing them. When your people get in trouble, go and get them out
